Attracting Visitors to Huntsville

  • What do ou think is the one thing we could change that would bring more visitors to Huntsville?

Many visitors looking for a destination search for their vacation, holiday, travel, and recreational needs online.

Many individual businesses and organizations already create an online prescense but these organizations are 1 in a sea of information on the Intenet.

If the Town and the region were able to strategically engage the Internet and all it has to offer in the way of attracting visitors there could be a significant benefit.

Hello,

As a member of the Soccer community in Huntsville, I would like to host more tournaments in Huntsville. Unfortunately, the facilities aren't there for any large scale tournaments. If we had more fields and better facilities (like a Multi-purpose indoor facility for Winter events), this could become a significant revenue generator. Clubs would travel to Huntsville to compete (as we've seen with the 5-on-5 youth tournament), which would exposes these people to our lifestyle. This could in turn attract more permanent residents to the community.

"If you build it, they will come."

Thank you,

At the risk of sounding like a broken record…, with the demographics of an aging population of baby boomers (with money) for the next 30 years, comes the increase of people with disabilities. While a second ice pad seems to be in the forefront, consideration should be given to include a new curling venue. Curling is a sport that attracts the older generation and is one of the sports that can be played by someone in a wheelchair. The current curling rink is substandard to say the least. It is structurally in need of repair, and in a poor location. If the Town were to take back the property it could develop it for housing. With a new accessible rink we would attract the Paralympic Winter Games, the Winter Ontario Games and a host of curling bonspeils attracting visitors from all over. With the push to make this Town a Mecca for Sports Tourism, it is a no brainer.

In order to attract visitors to Huntsville, Main Street between Centre and Brunell should be turned into a pedestrian precinct.

Vehicles could travel south on Centre, go along passed the library, and go north on Brunell. Nice plants and seating could be placed along the middle of Main Street and stores and cafes could spill outside.

If snow removal in the winter presents a problem, this pedestrian precinct could be in place between May and October. However,I would prefer to see it year round to encourage visitors to come to our downtown area during all seasons.

Hello. My name is Casey W. and I am a grade eight student. I think that to attract more people in the town of Huntsville is to maybe have more things happen in the winter because a lot of people come in the summer because it’s very beautiful. It is beautiful in the winter, but people just don’t come to see it. I know we have a Santa Claus Parade and everything , but we need something to attract people that aren’t just living in the town. We should have more stores on Main Street that attract people and a bigger mall to attract more people. (And better stores in the mall too. No offence, but the only three stores that attract people are CD Plus, Stitches, and Ardene.) I think that maybe we should have more things happen at Deerhurst Resort in the winter because they have lower occupancy in the winter. More things to do outside and get people active. Please consider this idea and thank you for your co-operation and time.

Hi, my name is Rachel Y, and I am a grade 7 student here in Huntsville. I think one thing that could attract visitors to Huntsville, would be more youth places. There aren’t that many things to do for kids my age, here in Huntsville, and maybe if we added a few things that were made specifically for the youth, we could attract more families (with kids) to Huntsville. Kids my age love sports, so if we added more sports related places, I think families may come here to use the facilities and possibly come back during the summer, or any other season to use these facilities and to maybe buy houses, cottages, etc. As previously said by another commenter, “With a new accessible rink we would attract the Paralympic Winter Games, the Winter Ontario Games.” I think this would be a great idea for everyone of all ages. I think a lot of people would enjoy seeing these “games” in our town. But, as I stated before, we need more youth places, things for us to do. Plus, with the added facilities for the youth, it would attract families with children to possibly move or buy cottages here. In my opinion, the things I’ve stated above would most likely attract more visitors. Thank you for your time.

Hi my name is Megan W, I am in grade 7 at Huntsville Public School, one of the things that I think that would attract visitors to Huntsville is that we should get a mini putt because some little kids like to have birthdays there.

As a member of Huntsville i would like to see the following:
I think we need a bigger mall with at least two floors. We need more stores in Huntsville for the mall so more people will want to come here. If you had a bigger mall you would also keep the local people here to shop. Another thing we need is more events in Huntsville like a bigger arena with weight lifting room and a bigger pool. It we could also have an outdoor skating rink with a stand for hot chocolate and a place where parents can watch their kids skate. Huntsville could use things to make our town more attractive, like more gardens and more people to help keep the streets clean.

Sincerely,

Bianca.C. from Huntsville Public School

As a small resort owner I see how tourism is so dependent on the weather. Most of the winter activities are outside and getting harder to plan because of the changing weather patterns. In the Spring, the area has little to offer other than some fishing.

We need ways to "weatherproof" tourism.

One suggestion is to expand the pool at the Centennial Centre into a much larger year round waterpark that is open to residents and visitors.

For your consideration,

I think following Collingwood The Village at Blue model in some way is ideal. Creating a village of sorts or spreading this village feel around the town would be ideal. Many would travel during all seasons to just see and enjoy the feeling of a euro village, with this browsing will come sales to retail and patrons to restaurants. And of course they all need somewhere to stay.

Another consideration is a better way to tie the ski hill traffic to the town, some sort of shuttle bus that runs during this period. Also come the non-winter months find ways to shuttle people from the Adventures around Huntsville (biking, hiking, canoing, golfing, etc etc) back into the town. We lose considerable dollars in the fact that most outdoor activities are on the outer reaches of the town. Let's close the gap! Create convenience. No planning just come to our town and we'll get you to anything you want to do!

Steve
